PHILOSOPHY

The primary objectives of The Texas Science Teacher are:

  • Providing ideas for creative, well-designed, and safe laboratory activities and demonstrations for students in all educational levels of Texas science classes; and

  • Serving as a forum for issues important to Texas science teachers at all levels.

WHY YOU SHOULD PUBLISH

The main purpose of STAT's publishing program is to allow you to share ideas with thousands of others who teach science in Texas. Publishing in The Texas Science Teacher is a way to make significant contributions to science programs all across Texas. In addition, there are frequently public relations benefits from students, school, and community upon publishing. The Texas Science Teacher can help you to communicate your ideas.

DECIDING WHAT TO SUBMIT TO THE TEXAS SCIENCE TEACHER

  • Short, practical items are in greatest demand by the readers of The Texas Science Teacher. Length, topics, and application vary greatly. Each issue will usually contain a balance of science topics and levels of teaching.

  • Not all ideas need to be original, but your topic should be treated from a unique perspective.

  • Articles should communicate ideas and information that will be interesting and useful to classroom teachers. Student-ready worksheets and activity descriptions are in demand.

  • If your article describes an activity, be sure you indicate how often you use the activity, for what grade levels it is appropriate, and techniques for assessing and managing the activity.

  • Letters to the Editor are always welcome. They provide a means of communicating enthusiasm, making suggestions, expressing opinions about current issues, soliciting assistance, or reacting to material published in recent issues. Letters to the Editor must be signed although names may be withheld by request.

  • Notices of professional opportunities will be included as space allows.

TO ACCOMPANY YOUR ARTICLE

  • Tables, graphs, and charts should be appropriately labeled. Make sure your data are accurate and metric units are used for all measurements.

  • Artwork may be included. You are encouraged to include appropriate art to accompany your submission. Student work is also acceptable if it can be reproduced and is of good quality.

  • Photographs are particularly useful. Black-and-white prints are best. Photos should show apparatus, students at work, or other illustrative features. Photos of humans must include a signed release from each recognizable person.

WHAT ABOUT COPYRIGHT?

Your work is protected by copyright laws. STAT will hold the copyright to your article in order to facilitate reprinting and republishing in the future. If you wish to have your article printed elsewhere, you need to secure permission from the Editor of the journal and include a credit line on the first page of the article.

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR MANUSCRIPT?

When you send a manuscript for publication, you will first receive a notice of acknowledgment and a transfer of copyright agreement. The manuscript is sent to at least two reviewers and feedback from the review process may take up to three months. Manuscripts accepted for publication usually appear within one year of the acceptance date.

Once your manuscript is selected to appear in The Texas Science Teacher, you will receive a word-processed copy of the edited manuscript for your approval prior to publication. When your article is published, you will receive three complimentary copies of that issue of The Texas Science Teacher. You may order additional offprints of your article directly from the publisher at prevailing rates.
