National Youth Science Camp

Two talented graduating seniors will be selected to represent Texas at the 2018 National Youth Science Camp (NYSC). Student delegates attend the STEM and outdoor adventure program, at no charge. Travel is included. The students also spend several days in Washington, DC.

 

Applications are currently open. Applications will close on February 28, 2018 at 6:00pm EST.

 

The dates of NYSC are planned for June 27 - July 21, 2018. Only students who can attend the entire session should plan to apply.

Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST)

The 2017-2018 nomination and application windows for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program are now open. Teachers of grades K-6 mathematics and science are encouraged to sign up to apply. The PAEMST awards are the nation's highest honors for teachers of mathematics and science. Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education. The National Science Foundation administers PAEMST on the behalf of The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

 

The 2017-2018 nomination window will close on April 1, 2018, and the application window will close on May 1, 2018. Teachers may be nominated for the award or may apply themselves at www.paemst.org. If you know great teachers, encourage them to join this prestigious network of professionals. In Texas, eligible teachers who submit a completed application by May 1, 2018, will receive 25 CPE hours.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Fellows

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recruiting teachers and education leaders to bring public health into classrooms across the United States and beyond. Selected fellows tour CDC’s state-of-the-art facilities and collaborate with CDC scientists to design innovative lessons, and to learn curriculum design and teaching strategies that engage students in math and science using today’s emerging public health topics.

Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) Global Biodiversity Observations Project

Educators who are looking for a way to get students into the field to observe nature and help document local and global biodiversity may visit the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) Global Biodiversity Observations project on iNaturalist.org.

 

Each month a theme is chosen, and project members document organisms that fit into that theme. Once verified on iNaturalist.org, images will be added to EOL species pages. EOL is a free resource of biodiversity information with contributions from scientists, citizen scientists and the public.  This is a foundational exercise for building science skills and encouraging students to ask questions about the natural world.

 

To get started:

  • Step 1: Visit iNaturalist.org and create an account. The iNaturalist app can be downloaded onto smartphones
  • Step 2: Visit the EOL Global Biodiversity Observations project page and click “Join Project”
  • Step 3: Get outside to take pictures of plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms. Then upload to iNaturalist and add them to the project.

Project 2061 Workshop

Educators are invited to apply to attend a free workshop presented by Project 2061, the science education initiative of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The workshop is designed especially for those who teach middle school science or high school biology, or serve as a science specialist or an administrator with science curriculum responsibilities. The workshop, “Supporting Three-dimensional Learning and Teaching With New Curriculum Materials,” will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2018, at the Hilton Hotel in Austin, Texas, in conjunction with the 2018 Annual Meeting of AAAS.

Led by the Project 2061 development team, the workshop will introduce participants to a pair of curriculum units designed to give students a coherent understanding of matter and energy in living organisms.

 

Toward High School Biology is designed for use in middle school and focuses on helping students understand what happens to atoms and molecules during the chemical reactions that result in the growth and repair of living organisms.

 

Matter and Energy for Growth and Activity is for high school biology students and expands on the middle school unit to help students understand the relationship between matter and energy changes. The unit also explores how energy-releasing and energy-requiring chemical reactions are coupled in living systems so that organisms can carry out basic life functions. The workshop will demonstrate how the units tackle some key problems, including persistent misconceptions that many students have about matter and energy.

 

Certificates of participation in this AAAS-sponsored professional development workshop will be provided to all teachers who attend. A light breakfast and lunch will be served. Teams of two or more educators representing middle and high schools are encouraged to apply. Educators will be notified by email if they are selected to attend.

 

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Annual Meeting

The AAAS Annual Meeting is the world’s largest multidisciplinary science gathering, with many scientific sessions, renowned speakers, and networking opportunities.

 

The 2018 meeting will take place February 15-19, 2018, in Austin, TX. Advance registration is available until January 24, 2018. Educator questions may be directed to meetings@aaas.org or (202) 326-6450.

 

Environmental Education Grants

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced that up to $3 million in funding for locally-focused environmental education grants will be available this week under the 2018 EE Local Grant Program. EPA will award three to four grants in each of EPA’s ten Regions, for no less than $50,000 and no more than $100,000 each, for a total of 30-35 grants nationwide. Proposals are due March 15, 2018. The Requests for Proposals will be posted on www.grants.gov later this week. In addition to other environmental topics, the 2018 EE Local Grant Program includes support for projects that reflect the intersection of environmental issues and agricultural best-practices, conservation of natural resources, food waste management, and natural disaster preparedness. Proposals are due by March 15, 2018. Aerospace Workshop from NASA

NASA's Texas Space Grant Consortium hosts an annual aerospace workshop, called LiftOff, which emphasizes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning experiences by incorporating a space science theme supported by NASA missions. Teacher participants are provided with information and experiences through speakers, hands-on activities and field investigations that promote space science and enrichment activities for themselves and others. LiftOff 2018 will be June 24-29, 2018 at NASA Johnson Space Center. 

 

The deadline for receiving applications is March 30, 2018, for LiftOff 2018 and should be submitted through the online system: http://www.tsgc.utexas.edu/liftoff/.

 

2018 NASA STEM Enhancement in Earth and Space Science Internship

STEM Enhancement in Earth and Space Science, or SEES, is a nationally competitive summer intern program for students in grades 10 and 11. NASA, the Texas Space Grant Consortium and The University of Texas at Austin Center for Space Research, or UT/CSR, have joined forces to provide this opportunity for high school students to increase their understanding of and interest in STEM careers. Scientists and engineers at UT/CSR are conducting NASA-supported research in astronomy, remote sensing and space geodetic techniques to help understand Earth systems, natural hazards and climate science. The SEES project provides selected students with exposure to Earth and space research. Participants will learn how to interpret NASA satellite data while working with scientists and engineers in their chosen area of work. The summer 2018 internship requires students to complete distance learning activities prior to their arrival for the on-site internship in Austin, Texas, July 14-28. Housing, transportation and meals will be provided. Students are selected on the basis of their academic records, written application that includes essay questions, introduction video, letter of recommendation, and interest in STEM.
