Texas will be submitting its proposal for the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and the public comment period ends this Friday, September 1. Currently, the draft ESSA plan does not contain science in the accountability and assessment indicators.

CALL TO ACTION: STAT urges individual science educators across Texas to provide feedback to TEA and the State Board of Education to include science in indicators. The deadline is Friday, September 1 at 5:00 p.m.

STAT suggests that modifications to the draft Texas ESSA should be made to include science (in both long-term and interim goals) in the following sections: (1) Academic Achievement Indicator (2) Growth Indicator and (3) School Quality and Student Success Indicator.

It is critical that the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and the State Board of Education (SBOE) hear from science educators on this important matter. Please take a moment to email TEA with your request and perspectives at essa@tea.texas.gov.

The Texas ESSA plan provides an opportunity to develop new goals for science and STEM education in grades K-16. Now is the time to leverage statewide policy to include science into the ESSA plan for academic achievement and assessments. The inclusion of science into the ESSA plan will provide accountability and signal to the Texas business community the value of science/STEM education. This will have substantial state budgetary impact from 2017-2032 and future budget dollars and professional development offerings are dependent upon the approved ESSA plan.

The draft proposal may be accessed here and again, your feedback must be emailed to TEA at essa@tea.texas.gov by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 1.
