Free science camps for international teachers and students
The EinsteinPlus Teacher Workshop is a one-week, intensive residential workshop for international high school teachers that focuses on key areas of modern physics — including quantum physics, special and general relativity, and cosmology. It also incorporates sessions on innovative teaching strategies suitable for all areas of physics. Deadline for applications is April 15, 2008.

The International Summer School for Young Physicists (ISSYP) is an exciting and challenging two-week program for Canadian students in Grade 11 (or secondaire V in Quebec) and international students ages 16 and 17. The program explores the most fascinating ideas theoretical physics has to offer — from the weird quantum world of atoms and subatomic particles to black holes, warped spacetime, and the expanding universe. Deadline for applications is March 31, 2008.

STAT Position Statement on Evolution
The media at the national and state level have been discussing evolution recently. The STAT Board of Directors updated the official Position Statement on Evolution in February 2006. Below is a PDF document of the official STAT Position Statement on Evolution. It was approved by the STAT Board of Directors on February 4, 2006.

Our current science standards, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), were adopted in 1998 and include the theory of evolution. The Science Teachers Association of Texas supports the position that evolution is a major unifying concept in science and should be included in K–12 science education standards, frameworks and curricula. Evolution should continue to be included in the new revision of the Science TEKS which begins in 2008.

Record Crowd of 6,800 Attendees CAST 2007

The 50th birthday party of STAT this November was outstanding! Many thanks to those who organized and planned this conference. There was a shift in attendance this year – with many more attendees arriving earlier on Thursday. Overall, everyone was pleased with the speakers, field trips, short courses, and social events. Mark your calendar for CAST 2008 in Fort Worth.
