Teaching in urban schools is a rewarding experience yet there are many issues.

When thinking about student success in science education, what are you doing?

What suggestions do you have for motivating learning and cultivating student success?

NSTA has a position statement that pinpoints some issues connected to teaching and learning science as well as some tips to consider for promoting success in the science classroom.

Here is a tip!

Students in grade 5 through high school tend be to aware of current events!

Have students read sections in the daily newspaper to find science; students must justify their findings by identifying specific science associated with newspaper article. Any section of the newspaper is open to analyze,

i.e. surfing during a hurricane, traffic accident on a rainy day, a product that claims to do something specific, etc..

Materials needed: a newspaper, inquiring minds of your students, presentation time to report out
