STAT Awards 2011
STAT AWARDS 2011 ARE NOW OPEN FOR NOMINATIONS!
Do you know an outstanding teacher who has made notable contributions to science education? Well, you're in the right place! Here, you can submit yourself, a friend, colleague, or mentor for a STAT Award. Award recipients receive a variety of prizes and recognition, including plaques, honorariums, and VIP tickets to CAST 2011 events.
The Awards Submission Deadline Has Passed. The committee is currently reviewing applicants and we will announce winners in August.
You must login into your STAT member account to access the nominations. If you have forgotten your password, simply click "request new password" under the login box to the left, and one will be emailed to you.
- All submitted materials should be in pdf format.
- All nominees/winners MUST be a member of STAT.
- Please submit the position statement as a PDF file. The position statement should be no longer than two double-spaced pages. It should address the nominee’s philosophy of teaching their subject of science, and why he or she would be the most qualified recipient of the award.
STAT AWARDS 2011: DESCRIPTION OF AWARDS AND THEIR REQUIREMENTS
Outstanding Science Teacher of the Year Awards
Rookie Science Teacher of the Year: Awarded to a STAT member in their first or second year of teaching.
Elementary Science Teacher of the Year: Awarded to an EC-4 teacher and STAT member.
Middle School Science Teacher of the Year: Awarded to a 5-8 teacher and STAT member.
High School Science Teacher of the Year: Awarded to a 9-12 teacher and STAT member.
Description: Winner receives a plaque, a $1,000 honorarium, and 2 tickets to the STAT VIP Breakfast, to be awarded at the CAST Opening Ceremony by the STAT President.
Requirements: Evidence of creativity in the classroom, where TEKS are taught effectively, classroom management exceeds expectations, and safety procedures are followed.
STAT Distinguished Leadership in Science Award *Administrator
Description: Awarded to a non-teaching Administrator in EC-12. Winner will receive 2 STAT VIP Breakfast Tickets for CAST 2011. Award will be given by the STAT Past President at the CAST Opening Ceremony.
Requirements: Evidence of outstanding support of science education at the district or state level, a curriculum vitae, and one or more letter of support that addresses the award criteria. This may be submitted by a principal, vice principal, area superintendent, colleague,former student, and/or parents of former students.
STAT Recognition of Service to Science Education *Business or Industry
Description: Awarded to a business or industry that has supported science education. Winner receives 2 STAT VIP Breakfast Tickets, to be awarded by the Awards Committee Chair at the CAST Opening Ceremony.
Requirements: Evidence of outstanding support of science education at the district or state level, a curriculum vitae, and one or more letter of support that addresses the award criteria. This may be submitted by a principal, vice principal, area superintendent, colleague, former student, and/or parents of former students.
Skoog Cup *College faculty or staff
Description: Awarded to a faculty or staff member at a Texas college or university who has demonstrated significant contributions and leadership in the development of quality science education. Winner receives the Skoog Cup trophy, 2 STAT VIP Breakfast Tickets, and a $500 honorarium provided by Texas Tech for the recipient to attend the Skoog Cup Luncheon at Texas Tech. Awarded at the CAST Opening Ceremony, presented by Gerald Skoog.
Requirements: A sustained record of: leadership in science education; advocacy for quality K-12 science education for all students; contributions to STAT and other professional science organizations; development of effective programs for pre-service and in-service teachers of science. One letter of nomination and two to five letters of support that describe how the nominee meets the criteria, as well as the nominee's curriculum vitae.
Virginia Woods Award *Member
Description: Awarded as an ongoing recognition of Virginia Woods' contributions to science education in general, and to the Science Teachers Association of Texas in particular. It is the highest award STAT can bestow upon a member for contributions to science education. Winner will receive a plaque, an honorarium of $1,000, and 2 Tickets to the STAT VIP Breakfast. Presented by Virginia Woods at the CAST Opening Ceremony.
Requirements: The recipient must be a long standing member of STAT (at least 20 years), and has made significant contributions to science education, including any or all of the following: outstanding leadership and service in STAT activities; longstanding leadership in a field of science education; outstanding contributions to the improvement of science curriculum; scholarly writing in the field of science education; contributions to science education over a significant length of time; overall excellence of contributions to STAT and science education. One letter of nomination and two to five letters or support, plus the nominees curriculum vitae, are required. This award will only be given when an exceedingly worthy individual is identified.
