Participants will build their own Dobsonian telescope. An introduction to optics will precede a step-by-step procedure to assemble a reflecting telescope powerful enough to see deep-sky objects. This is one of the most “user friendly” telescopes and can be operated by a child! Lunch, snacks, all materials, plans for the telescope, lessons on introductory optics, and information on obtaining materials for additional telescopes will be provided.

Learn about our Moon and NASA’s plans to explore it with the Moon Mineralogy Mapper Instrument – a spectrometer aboard the Indian Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, launching in Spring 2008! Participants will learn what light reflected from the Moon’s surface tells scientists, and use classroom spectrometers to collect and analyze rock data in an activity that simulates the mission.
