Featured Presenters:

Jeff Hepburn:

An accomplished presenter and with 30 years of teaching experience, Jeff Hepburn has given over 125 presentations in 25 states and 2 foreign countries. Jeff is an active member of the Iowa Academy of Science and leader within the Iowa Science Teachers Section. He received the Excellence in Science Teaching Award for Chemistry Education in 1993. He has presented on uses of technology, inquiry in the Chemistry classroom, and use of demonstrations. He is also been a presenter for one of the Flinn Scientific Foundation Summer Workshop teams. A part-time magician, Jeff presents entertaining and inspiring ideas for teaching Chemistry.

John Mauch: 

John Mauch teaches Chemistry and AP chemistry at Braintree High School in Braintree, MA. John received his B.A. in Chemistry from Whitworth College and M.A. in Curriculum and Education from Washington State University and has 25 years of teaching experience. John is an expert in “writing to learn” in the chemistry curriculum and in microscale chemistry. He is the author of two lab manuals, Chemistry in Microscale, Volumes I and II (Kendall/Hunt). He is also a dynamic and prolific demonstrator and workshop leader. John has presented the Flinn Scientific Chem Demo Extravaganza show at NSTA conventions for seven years and has conducted more than 100 workshops across the country. John was a Chemistry Team Member for the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation program for four years and is currently a Team Leader for the Flinn Foundation Summer Workshop Program.

Paul Price

Penney Sconzo:

Penney Sconzo received her B.S. degree from Furman University and her M.S. degree from Clemson University.  Working since 1983 in both public and private high schools, she has taught all levels of chemistry as well as occasional classes in biology, microbiology, biochemistry, and organic chemistry.  Currently, Penney teaches at the Westminster Schools in Atlanta, Georgia.  Come visit!  She has been the recipient of the Georgia Science Teacher of the Year award, the Chemical Manufacturers Association Regional Catalyst Award, a state winner for the Presidential Award for Science, and a national Tandy Award winner.  She does presentations and workshops involving chemical demonstrations, microchemistry, and calculator/laboratory technology at state, regional and national conventions, including NSTA and CHEMED/BCCE conferences.  She was a lead teacher in chemistry for the Woodrow Wilson TORCH program, served as co-chair of the T3 CHEMBIO program, and has served as a member of the ACS test writing committee. She now leads one of the Flinn Scientific Foundation teams that present summer workshops.  Today, her favorite element is gallium!

The field trip will consist of a film and information about oil refining followed by a guided tour of the oil refinery.

7:00 PM on 8-5-08 $15.00 Limited to 30

The after - hours tour features the vineyards and surround property, a winery tour, and a visit to the tasting room.  After the tasting, dessert will be served on a balcony overlooking the property.                Bus to Kiepersol Winery will load at Camp Tyler.

·         East Texas Oil Museum 12:30 to 4:30 on 8-6-08 $ 20.00 (plus a $6.00 ticket price collected at the museum) limited to 33

East Texas Oil Museum is located on the campus of Kilgore College in Kilgore, Texas. This fascinating museum houses the authentic re-creation of oil discovery and production in the early 1930s from the largest oil field inside U.S. boundaries.

Monday: Team Building Challenge (rock wall, zip line and more) Dinner and S'mores at Camp Tyler (part of the room and board fee for Camp Tyler, tickets are available)

Tuesday: evening field trip to Kiepersol winery (limited number of tickets)

Share-A-Thon:

We are organizing a Round Table “Share-A-Thon” - A chance to share a 3 minute teaching tip/lab/activity/demonstration or anything else. You will share with 10 participants at a time and we will rotate the participant to different tables every 30 minutes. Bring 10 copies for participants to view at your table. All participants will receive a copy of your Share-A-Thon material on their flash drive (so bring yours to the conference).

 Plan to Present

The highlight of any ACT2 Biennial Conference are the workshops presented by Texas Chemistry Teachers in the tradition exemplified by George Hague that teaching chemistry is fun.  Plan to present your favorite laboratory experiments, demonstrations, activities or successful teaching strategies.  Share and also add to your teaching arsenal at the 2008 ACT2 Biennial. 

Special item of note:

If you bring a flash drive, a copy of all conference presentation material received will be copied to your flash drive during the conference.

Registration and ACT2 dues = $110.00 - Housing at Camp Tyler on the lake and all meals=$80.00
